These two speed monsters add up to 20 odd years in existence but they are still forces to be reckoned with. We are looking at the '08 Subaru WRX STi and the Yamaha R6 sport bike. Against a rural industrial backdrop, it felt very much like the charm of the good old days where nothing matters except for the wind in the hair.

This satisfies the boy racer in us. The VW GTI is an absolute firecracker that teases with some wheel spin at a full throttle take off. Though not as planted as the AWD Golf R, much of the joy comes this "flawed" character anyway; dances round corners and skips around undulating terrain. We definitely had a field time driving more than shooting the GTI.

With almost 300bhp to boot, we are loving the Volkswagen Golf R's under-the-radar looks and it’s exhilarating raw pace and refinement - which is totally perfect for the traffic scene here. And being an all-rounder is a good thing - you can drive to the supermarket or laundry dry-cleaner without being labelled as an overkill. This highly regarded family hatch does nought to hundred under 5 seconds, creeping into Porsche 911 category for less than half the price, something an adrenaline junkie dad can seriously consider for his next ride.

A nicely done up ride and a sweet girlfriend who colluded with us to spring a surprise birthday car shoot for him. What more can this fortunate man ask for?

This is the 381bhp engine that underpins Mercedes AMG A45's position as the world's most powerful series-produced 4 cylinder road legal car. Hints of fast can be drawn through it's oversized intakes, canards and diffusers, screaming-red big brake kits, a devilish looking spoiler and twin tailpipes. All these, and still maintaining its svelte body contours of the current Mercedes design language. It would be lovely to shoot this special sports hatchback against Singapore's beautiful iconic skyline. And we did exactly what we need to.
